Card Stack Solitaire: How to Win Every Time

Solitaire (Klondike) is the world's most-played card game. But many players win rarely — and don't know why. This guide covers the strategies that turn casual solitaire players into consistent winners.

Klondike Solitaire Rules Refresher

You deal cards into 7 tableau columns (1 card in column 1, 2 in column 2, up to 7 in column 7). Only the top card of each column is face up. The rest form a stock pile.

Build tableau columns down in alternating colors (red on black, black on red). Build foundations up by suit from Ace to King. Win by moving all 52 cards to the foundations.

Strategy 1: Expose Hidden Cards First

Your top priority is flipping face-down cards. Every face-down card you reveal opens new moves. Prioritize moves that uncover hidden cards over moves that just rearrange visible ones.

Strategy 2: Don't Rush to the Foundations

Moving cards to the foundations too early can trap you. Keep low cards (2s, 3s, 4s) in the tableau until you're sure you won't need them to unlock other moves.

Strategy 3: Empty Columns Are Gold

An empty tableau column lets you move any King (or any card with a King beneath) into it. This unlocks the face-down card beneath. Create empty columns deliberately.

Strategy 4: Manage Your Stock Pile

Don't draw from the stock until you've exhausted tableau moves. The stock is your safety net. Use it last.

Strategy 5: Plan King Placements

Only Kings can fill empty columns. When you have a choice of which King to play, think ahead about which color sequence you'll build on it.

Common Solitaire Mistakes

  • Moving Aces immediately: Usually fine, but check if you need the 2 of that suit first.
  • Ignoring the stock: Some players forget to draw and miss key cards.
  • Building long tableau chains: Long chains are hard to move. Break them up when possible.
  • Not using undo: If your solitaire game has undo, use it to test moves.

Advanced Solitaire Tips

Count Cards

Track which cards have appeared. If you need the black 7 and haven't seen it, it's in the stock or under a face-down card.

Prioritize by Difficulty

Move cards that unlock the most face-down cards first. Sometimes a less obvious move opens more of the board.

Know When to Restart

If the board is clearly unwinnable (key cards buried with no path to them), restart. Don't waste time on dead games.
